- Location and Mission
The Hydrodynamic Research Laboratory is integrated into the Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering Laboratory, located on a 5000 m2 area at Yildiz Technical University (YTU) Davutpasa Campus in Istanbul. This laboratory conducts physical modeling studies for strategic investments, utilizing advanced technologies in areas such as coastal and marine structures (design of port structures for commercial or tourism purposes, offshore platforms, submarine pipelines, and energy lines, planning and development of offshore energy production systems, etc.) and ship design (maneuver and hydrodynamic tests of commercial and military vessels).


Application Areas
Two and three-dimensional model tests are conducted in the laboratory, including:
• Port planning, turbulence models inside the port,
• Wave interaction of coastal and offshore structures,
• Stability tests,
• Solid transport models,
• Tsunami effect,
• Berthing tests for marine vessels,
• Navigation tests for submarines and surface vehicles,
• Submarine structures,
• Global climate change models,
• Offshore structures,
• Wind and/or wave energy turbines,
• Moving seabed-structure interaction/local scour modeling,
• Modeling the behavior of marine structures under seismic loads,
• Wave transformation experiments, and more.
Three-Dimensional (3D) Wave Pool
The wave pool has dimensions of 28.85 m x 36.43 m. It is equipped with a 48-paddle piston-type wave generator designed by HR Wallingford, capable of generating versatile waves. The wave generator can produce regular, irregular, long, and short crested (directional) waves. The wave generator also has an active reflection damping feature to dampen reflected wave energy.
The wave pool includes a bridge crane with a lifting capacity of 5 tons.

Main Features of the Wave Generator
In the HR Wallingford designed piston-type regular/irregular directional wave generator, there are 6 modular units with a length of 4.8 m, totaling 28.80 m in length.
Each wave generator module contains 8 paddles with a width of 60 cm (maximum stroke: 3.35 m). With a total of 48 paddles, it features flexible operation capability.
In addition to the active reflection damping function, there is also a depth-adjustable passive damper.
A depth-adjustable parabolic-type passive wave damping system is located on the opposite shore of the wave generator.
JONSWAP, Pierson-Moskowitz, Bretschneider, ITTC, Darbyshire coastal and offshore, Neumann, BTTP, and Pink type spectra can be generated.

Depth-limited regular wave height: H = water depth / 2
Wave period (T) range: 0.50 s to 5.0 s
Maximum regular wave height: 0.58 m for 1.5 s < T < 2.5 s
Maximum significant wave height: 0.08 m to 0.30 m
Wave direction: −40° to +40°
Two-Dimensional (2D) Wave Flume and Generator
For the wave flume with glass sides and a steel frame on both sides:
Horizontal Dimensions: 26.0 m length, 1.0 m width
Depth: 1.0 m
Piston Type Generator: Wave generator with active reflection damping function (Edinburgh Designs).
Irregular waves belonging to Regular and JONSWAP, PM, Bretschneider, ITTC, Ochi Hubble type and user-defined spectra are produced.
